(More customer reviews)I should disclose that I bought the next sized unit up from this--the xq12L10a--and kept it for a week and returned it for this unit. My complaint with the larger sized unit was that I felt like I was living with a gorrilla or more aptly a Pratt and Whitney jet engine.
The space where the unit is installed is a studio apartment with 11 foot ceilings, so basically whatever unit is purchased for the space is something the occupant is going to be in close proximity to all the time.
For this reason, I took a gamble and decided to replace the unit with this unit, the 10,000 BTU xq10L10a. I found that the high fan setting the xq10L10a is about as noisy as the LOW fan setting of the bigger unit. All other things being equal, I am quite happy with this machine and can report it functions perfectly and gently which is of paramount concern to me. It's not going to be silent, but quite acceptable for a small living space. The unit doesn't rumble or vibrate and the thermostat seems to do a good job. You can hear the compressor with the fan on low, but this is normal for any unit of this design type.
The Friedrich tech support is quite good--you get someone on the phone without an issue, although it's kind of hit or miss depending on who you talk to as with most tech support services. For this sized unit, I have no complaints and think it's a good choice for a compact window unit in it's size range.
